Protect the Medina River: Sign the TRPA Petition Today!

The Medina River is a beautiful, pristine stream that meanders through the Texas Hill Country and the historic town of Castroville. The Medina is threatened, however, by the City of Castroville's current plan to discharge up to 900,000 gallons per day of treated sewage into the river.

We need your help to get the City of Castroville to change course and focus on protecting its most valuable resource. Please take action today by signing TRPA's online petition asking the City of Castroville to withdraw its permit application to discharge treated wastewater into the Medina River.

Castroville has never discharged its wastewater into the Medina and there is no reason to start now. Instead of switching to a discharge operation, Castroville should expand its land application wastewater facilities and infrastructure, and take advantage of other opportunities for wastewater irrigation and reuse. By sticking with irrigation and reuse, Castroville can help keep the Medina River clean, keep the community's trees and vegetation healthy during drought, and keep more money in ratepayers' pockets by not having to build a discharge plant.

A discharge operation, on the other hand, just sends treated wastewater downstream and puts the Medina's exceptional water quality at risk. In the long run, Castroville will have little inclination to invest in reuse options and infrastructure if it has already spent millions of dollars on a discharge plant.

We must act now to make sure that Castroville makes the right choice for the Medina River. Please sign the petition today, and tell your friends and family to do the same during this holiday season.

Thank you for your support, and stay tuned for updates in the New Year as we continue on in our efforts to protect the Medina and other Texas rivers.
